History The origin of this breed is very ancient: the indigenous people of Latin America, during special ceremonies, fed on their meat, a delicacy, as it was considered a living testimony of the god "Xolotl", after which the breed takes its name. Its mission was to guide the souls of the deceased to their eternal home. The hairless type of this breed is also known as the "Mexican Hairless Dog". There are three varieties that are distinguished by size: the small size is used as a companion dog; the medium and large sizes as a property guardian. It is very popular in dog shows and in pet therapy. General Appearance The Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican Hairless Dog) is a breed that is found in 3 sizes: the small reaches a height between 25-35 cm (10-13.7 inches), the medium between 35 and 45 cm (13.7-17.7 inches), while the standard reaches between 45 and 55 cm (17.7-21.6 inches). Its most important characteristic is the almost complete lack of hair, with smooth and soft skin. The build is compact, solid and harmonious in all its parts. It adapts to domestic life even if it needs large open spaces where it can practice daily exercise; it does not cause particular problems because it is a very clean and silent dog. Rare. It loves playing and being in the presence of children. Xolos have a strong urge to chase and catch cats or other small animals, so it is best to keep them on a leash . It is very suspicious and guarded in the presence of strangers. Good home guardian: it will warn its owner in case of need or danger. The Xolo learns quickly and is quite easy to train; however, it could be dominant in the presence of a less decisive owner. Low maintenance: Grooming is only necessary from time to time. Xolos are not particularly intelligent dogs: they memorize new commands in 40-80 repetitions and obey the first command on average 30% of the times. Hypoallergenic: Yes.
