History In 1853 the Appenzell Mountain Dog was described for the first time as “a short-haired, multi-coloured mountain dog of medium size, which may be found in certain regions; it has the appearance of a Spitz type, used both for guarding the farms and for herding flocks.” In 1895, chief forest ranger Max Sieber, one of the great promoters of the breed, asked the Swiss Canine Society (SCS) to take measures to safeguard the Appenzeller Mountain Dog. In 1906 the "Swiss Appenzell Mountain Dog Club" was created with the aim of promoting the breed in its natural state. The compulsory registration of the puppies in the “Study Book of the Appenzell Mountain Dog” marked the beginning of breeding as a pure breed. In 1914, Prof. Albert Heim drew up the first valid breed standard. The region of origin of the breed was the Appenzell district; today its breeding is practiced throughout Switzerland and in a good number of European countries. General Appearance Tricolor dog, of medium size, almost fit into a square, well proportioned and harmonious in all its parts. The coat is shiny and medium-short in length. The thick undercoat allows to withstand the low temperatures typical of the Alps.
