History There is no precise information on how a short and rough haired variety (Smooth Collie) was developed alongside the long-haired Scottish Shepherd (Rough Collie), but it is quite certain that the two types were selected simultaneously. It is historically recognized that the Short-haired Collie was a herding dog that tended livestock from the Scottish Lowlands, where its short, harsh coat was suited to the temperate, humid climate of those regions; the long-haired one, on the other hand, was more comfortable in the harsh temperatures of the Highlands, the mountainous regions of Scotland. Regardless of the difference in coat, Smooths have proven to be less sensitive to extreme climates, more balanced and more receptive to training. Until 1870, in England, the Smooth and the Rough were judged together in competitions, as if they were two varieties of the same dog. It was only in 1870 that the two types started to be evaluated separately. General Appearance The Short-haired Collie has a physical structure based on strength and activity, showing no clumsiness and with no trace of coarseness. Generally, it demonstrates ease in learning and is capable of dealing with any type of circumstance in a balanced way with a high degree of attention and collaboration, as long as it is respected. Thanks to these characteristics it was used as a defense and police dog in France and Germany. In the United States and Northern Europe, it is used as a guide to assist blind and disabled people. Its aptitude for work and its ability to learn also make it an excellent companion in dog sports such as agility and obedience.
