History The Black Russian Terrier was developed in Russia between the 1940s and 1950s by selecting crosses between breeds such as the Rottweiler, the Giant Schnauzer, the Airedale Terrier, and the Newfoundland. The main ancestor of the breed is considered to be the Giant Schnauzer. Initial breeding was supervised by the Military Cynology School, outside Moscow, and the dogs were kept in the “Red Star” kennels. The aim of the creators of the breed was to develop a very large, courageous, strong and easily manageable working dog, with powerful guarding instinct. The Black Russian Terrier is a dog adaptable to many tasks and different climatic conditions; in fact, in its country of origin it was used in the cold climates of Siberia to tow sleds and, in more recent times, in Afghanistan for transporting ammunition and searching for survivors. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1984. General Appearance The Black Russian Terrier is a large dog with a slightly long body and an extremely athletic, robust and vigorous structure. The muscular structure is well proportioned, the limbs are straight, energetic; the hind legs are further away than the forelegs. The feet are large, thick, round, with nails and pads that are good for any type of terrain. The movement is fast, easy and elegant.
