History The Papillon is one of the two varieties of the Continental Toy Spaniel. This variety was originally born with hanging ears (Phalènes). Only towards the end of the 19th century was the variety with large erect ears, reminiscent of butterfly wings, selected, which gives the breed its name. It is not a very popular breed although it is bred and appreciated in many countries such as France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden and the United States.
