History It is possible that the Irish Terrier is the oldest terrier breed in Ireland, but documentary evidence is limited and can’t provide definitive proof. Before 1880, the color of the Irish Terrier was not defined: in addition to the red coat, there were sometimes black and tan or streaked coats but, starting from the last decades of the 19th century, these two types were eliminated from breeding. These red-coated Irish Terriers soon made their appearance at shows in England and the United States, where they were enthusiastically received. Their fame grew further during the First World War, when they were used to carry messages in the tragic context of trench warfare, thus demonstrating their intelligence and courage. The first breed club was set up in Dublin on 31 March 1879, and the Irish Terrier was the first of the group to be recognized by the English Kennel Club as an original Irish breed. General Appearance The Irish Terrier has an active and lively appearance: speed, resistance, strength and agility are all peculiarities of this breed, called upon to carry out a large number of tasks. In fact, the Irish Terrier is used as a den dog, game retriever and wild animal seeker even in water.
