Basenji History The first specimens were brought from the sources of the Nile as a gift to the pharaohs of Egypt, therefore millennia before Christ. The Basenji was well known in ancient Egypt, so much so that in many tombs of the Fourth Dynasty, dating back to 3600 BC, we find it depicted crouching near the master's chair. Millennia passed and traces of the Basenji were lost. It began to be talked about again around 1870 due to the high regard held by the tribes that populated the territories between Sudan and Congo, which was then open to European exploration. The story goes that in 1895 the Basenji made its first appearance in Europe although the first imported pair died from distemper. Other imports followed and the breed began to conquer English dog lovers. The first Basenji was imported to the United States of America in 1941 and soon after to Canada.
