Puli History The Puli is a breed of herding dog of Asian origin. Its ancestors most likely arrived in the Carpathian Basin with the ancient Magyars, who lived as nomadic cattle herders. In past centuries the Puli was also used for hunting, at which it excelled, especially for retrieving in water, so much so that it was called the "Hungarian water dog". Lively, intelligent, agile, without particular needs, of medium size, it adapts well everywhere. Every Puli is a natural herder and instinctively knows how to herd a flock of sheep or cattle, even if it was raised as a family dog and was never trained to do so. It can also be an excellent watchdog or companion. The first breed standard was drawn up in 1905; the last one, still in force, is that of 2013. General Appearance Medium-sized dog, with a strong build, square structure and fine but not too light bone. The rather lean body is well muscled in every part. It is difficult to judge the various parts of the body, all covered in hair so thick that it forms curls and cords.
