Newfoundland. History: This breed originated in the island of Newfoundland, Canada, from indigenous dogs and the large black bear dog, introduced by the Vikings after 1100. With the arrival of European fishermen, various breeds contributed to its development and to give it new vigor, but the essential characteristics remained unchanged. At the beginning of the colonization of the island in 1610, Newfoundland dogs already largely possessed its own morphology and natural behavior. These characteristics allowed them to resist the harshness of the climate, when they pulled heavy loads on land, and the hostile sea, when they served as water or rescue dogs. General Appearance: The Newfoundland is a massive dog, with a powerful body, muscular and well-coordinated in movement. The length of the body from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock is greater than the height at the withers. The body is compact. The female may be slightly longer and less massive than the male. The distance from the withers to the underside of the chest, is slightly greater than the distance from the underside of the chest to the ground. The expression of the Newfoundland reflects goodness and sweetness. Dignified, joyful and enterprising, it is known for its docility and its imperturbable calm.
