Belgian Shepherd - Tervuren. History: At the end of the 19th century in Belgium there were several herding dogs that only had different coats. In order to standardize the breed some passionate dog lovers formed a club under the expert guidance of Professor A. Reul, of the School of Veterinary Medicine of Cureghem, who can be considered as the true pioneer and founder of the breed. The Groenendael variety was bred by Mr. Nicolas Rose, owner of the Château de Groenendael in the Soignes wood, south of Brussels. Mr. Danhieux instead selected the Tervueren starting from mating a bitch named Miss with a Groenendeael male named Duc owned by Mr. Rose. From this litter a long-haired fawn male, named Milsart, was born. This was the first Tervueren born in the late 1800s. Little is known about the birth of the Malinois, the short-haired variant of the Belgian Shepherd who came from the north-western region of Belgium, and precisely from the surroundings of Mechelen, in the province of Antwerp. The last variety, the Laekenois, takes its name after the castle of Laeken in Brussels suburbs.
