Shetland Sheepdog - "Sheltie". History: The breed comes from crossings with the Rough Collie and with small dogs called "whalers". According to some scholars, the Shetland could also derive from crossings between Spaniel and Spitz. Its name comes from the homonymous Shetland Islands, separated from Scotland by only a few miles of sea. In 1908 the recognition of the breed was requested by the Kennel Club of London, but the request was declined following the opposition of the Collie breeders, who contested the denomination of Shetland Collie. Only in 1914 was the breed recognized under the name of Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie . In the 1920s and 1930s, the Kennel Club authorized further crossings with the Collie to "refine" the characteristics of the breed.
