Dalmatian. History: The origin of the Dalmatian dog still remains obscure and is based only on assumptions. From representations, discovered in the tombs of the ancient Pharaohs and resembling paintings dating back to the period from the 16th to the 18th century, the appearance of the Dalmatian can be traced back to a few thousand years ago. Church chronicles from the 14th century and from the year 1719 clearly suggest that the breed originated in the Mediterranean region, especially in the vicinity of the Dalmatian coast. The first illustrations of the breed can be found in paintings by Italian artists of the 16th century and in a fresco in Zaostrog (Dalmatia) which can be dated to around 1710. A work by Thomas Bewick, published in 1792, contains a description and a drawing of a Dalmatian, which Bewick refers to as "the Dalmatian or the Carriage Dog". The first standard for the Dalmatian was drawn up by an Englishman, named Vero Shaw, in the year 1882; in 1890 this standard became the official breed standard.
