Ideal breed as a first dog. Adaptability to apartment living Good apartment dog. It is a small breed that has a friendly temperament and good versatility. Tendency to bark Frequent Relationship with children It is an excellent playmate for children because it is able to interact with them in a delicate way. Relationship with cats The hunting instinct is very strong in this breed, in fact it tends to chase other animals from time to time. Relationship with dogs The West Highland Terrier gets along well with other dogs in public settings (unless it is one of the two unneutered males in the group) and does well in multi-dog homes. Exercise needs This breed tends to need an hour of exercise every day. Trainability The West Highland Terrier is a highly intelligent dog that can quickly learn the information provided. Prefers positive reinforcement training. Grooming The West Highland Terrier has a hard coat which, in order to be well groomed, needs a particular care called "stripping", a mechanical action for plucking out the dead hair. Intelligence West Highland Terriers are ranked as one of the top 100 smartest dog breeds – they are able to learn new commands after 25-40 repetitions. Playfulness This dog is capable of rewarding interaction in play and shows impeccable confidence and meekness in all activities. Health problems Hypoallergenic: YES. These dogs are prone to minor health problems such as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), copper toxicosis, patellar luxation and cataracts. More severe pathologies such as Legg- Perthes disease, craniomandibular osteopathy (CMO), globoid cell leukodystrophy, skin diseases, and deafness are sometimes diagnosed.
