BREED TRAITS & CHARACTERISTICS FCI standard 097 Breed group 5 - DOGS TYPE SPITZ AND PRIMITIVE TYPE Breed section 4A - EUROPEAN SPITZ Origin Germany Size Small Longevity 13-15 years Average litter size 1-5 puppies Temperament Alert, lively, incredibly devoted to its owner, stubborn Height 30-38 cm / 8-20 inches Weight 9-13 kg / 10-50 pounds Colors Black, black and tan, brown, cream, orange, reddish, white, gray Adaptability Given the very thick coat, the German Spitz is resistant to bad weather such as cold, rain and snow. Adaptability to apartment living These dogs adapt well to apartment living or houses with gardens. The German Spitz has no predatory instinct therefore it is good for living with children and small animals. Tendency to bark German Spitz are considered watchdogs, alerting their owner with a bark if something is wrong Relationship with children -. Relationship with cats The German Spitz by nature does not like other animals and prefers to be the only pet in the house. Relationship with dogs The German Spitz should be trained to socialize from an early age even if, by nature, they tend to get along well with other dog breeds. Openness to strangers The German Spitz tends to be wary of strangers. Watch ability They are watchdogs in the sense that they alert and, if a guest is at the front door, they welcome them barking to warn the owner. Exercise needs These dogs have high energy levels. Make sure they get at least a good half-hour to an hour's walk a day with some play sessions. Trainability German Spitz are very intelligent dogs, but they can also be stubborn: a strong-willed trainer is ideal. Grooming Because they have a very thick, fluffy coat, German Spitzes need brushing several times a week to remove dead hairs and avoid tangles. Intelligence They are very intelligent dogs, but also quite stubborn. Playfulness Not playful. They are quite calm dogs, not obsessed with play. However, they get bored easily. Health problems Some of the most common health problems the German Spitz suffers from include: collapsing trachea, epilepsy, patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy.
