German Spitz. History: The German Spitz descends from the “Peat Dog” (Torfhund) or “Canis familiaris palustris Rütimeyer”, that lived in peat bogs in the Stone Age, and from the later Spitz of the Pile Dwelling Villages (Pfahlbau). It is the oldest dog breed in Central Europe. Numerous other breeds originated from this. In countries where German is not spoken, German Spitz are known as Keeshonds and Toy Spitz, as well as Pomeranian Spitz. General Appearance: The Spitz has a double coat, with a thick and soft undercoat. Particularly striking is the collar around the neck, similar to a mane, and the bushy tail carried over the back. The fox-like head with alert eyes and small pointed ears give the Spitz its unique, characteristic appearance.
