Pug. History: This breed, which would appear to come from the Orient, has given rise to many conjectures. The breed originated in China, where flat-nosed dogs have always been preferred. Dogs were transported to Europe by traders of the East India Company and since 1500 the breed has been adored in the Netherlands. The Pug (or Carlino) arrived in England when William III ascended the throne. Until 1877 the breed was known here only in fawn color, but in that year a black pair was imported from the Orient. Its name in Italian derives from the name of Carlo Bertinazzi, an actor who played the part of Harlequin in Paris and whose black mask resembled that of this little dog. General Appearance: The Pug's constitution is compact and proportionate. The skull is rather rounded and the really flat muzzle gives it the most peculiar expression, considered very nice. The legs are short, but fairly muscular.
