French Bulldog. History: Like all mastiffs, it probably came from the molosser of Epirus and the Roman Empire, a relative of the Bulldog of Great Britain, of the Alans of the Middle Ages, of the mastiffs and small mastiff-like dogs of France, the Bouledogue we know is the result of the several crossings made by enthusiastic breeders in the working-class neighboroods of Paris in the 1880s. At that time, it was popular among stevedores, butchers and coachmen of the general markets (the Halles) then it became fashionable in high society and the world of artists thanks to its very peculiar physical appearance and its character. It spread rapidly. The first breed club was founded in 1880 in Paris. The first registration dates back to 1885 and the first standard was set in 1898, when the Société Centrale Canine recognized the Bouledogue Francais breed. The first dog of this breed was presented at a show in 1887. The standard was modified in 1931-1932 and in 1948; it was revised in 1986 by Reant and R.Triquet (FCI publication 1987), then in 1994 by the committee of the Club du Bouledogue Français with the collaboration of R. Triquet. General Appearance: A typical small size molosser. Powerful for its small size, short, compact in all its proportions, with a short muzzle, snub nose, erect ears and a naturally short tail. Must have the appearance of an active, intelligent, well-muscled, compactly built animal with solid bone.
