English Bulldog. History: The Bulldog was first recognized in 1630, although there are precedents of similar dogs: the “bandog” (or Pitt bull), a name given to a type of fighting dog. Originally used for fighting bulls, the Bulldog fought its way into the arenas and after 1835 began to evolve into the stockier, shorter-nosed version we know now. It is a delightfully ugly dog with a boxer expression, masking a sweet, gentle disposition with family and friends. The Bulldog is one of the oldest indigenous breeds, also known as the National Dog of Great Britain. General Appearance: Short-haired, relatively stocky dog, rather short in stature, broad, powerful and compact. The head is rather large in relation to size, but not to the point of altering general symmetry or interfering with its gait. The muzzle is short and broad, turned slightly upward, which might cause breathing difficulties. The body is relatively short, well built, its limbs are strong and muscular. Females are not as large and muscular as males.:
