Rottweiler
The Rottweiler is a large breed dog, mas-
sive and muscular, intelligent and with a
dominant character. A lover of children, he
is a dog who loves family and can hardly tol-
erate an education that is too violent and rigid.
The Rottweiler is a lovable and affectionate, in-
telligent and obedient dog. Calm and docile, it is
a dog that knows how to be in contact with chil-
dren even though its appearance often inspires
fear. By nature, he is particularly attentive to his
surroundings. The Rottweiler is a very powerful
dog, of large size and with evident musculature.
The proportions are harmonious and its appear-
ance intimidates outsiders.
The Rottweiler is one of the oldest dogs in the
world since already in Roman times the breed was
known and used as a guard dog and as a shep-
herd dog. The name of the breed derives from the
Rottweil region, where the Roman legions settled
for a short time. The dogs they brought with them,
in fact, joined the indigenous dogs with crosses
between the two varieties.
Rottweil's butcher dogs remained utility dogs for a
long time. In the 20th century, the Rottweiler became
a police dog and was recognized by the FCI in 1920.
Leonberger
In the late 1930s, Heinrich Essig, city councilor in Leonberger, near Stuttgart, crossed a black and white female
Newfoundland with a male named "Barry" who came from the Great St Bernard hospice-monastery. The result
was very large puppies with long white fur. Essig's aim was to create a lion-looking dog, since the lion was the
animal that appeared on the coat of arms of the city of Leonberger. The
first dogs truly worthy of bearing the name "Leonberger Dogs" were
born in 1846. They embodied the excellent qualities of the
breeds from which they descended. Only a short time later,
given their character as a “symbol”, a good number of
these dogs were exported by Leonberger him-
self all over the world. At the end of the 19th
century, the Leonberger was mostly
used as a farm dog; his qualities
as a guard and draft dog
were highly valued. Today
the "Leonberger's
Dog" is an excellent
companion dog.
