History The Maremmano Shepherd derives from the ancient shepherd dogs used in the Italian regions of Maremma and Abruzzo. The first testimonies date back to Roman times: in that period Latin authors such as Varro and Columella (2nd and 1st century BC) mentioned a large white dog used to guard flocks. Until 1860 the Shepherd dogs present in Tuscany and Abruzzo were considered two distinct breeds.
