Bichon Frisé
Small cheerful and playful dog, with a
lively step, medium length muzzle, long
very loose corkscrew hair, very similar to
the coat of the Mongolian goat. The
carriage of the head is proud and tall,
the eyes dark, lively and expressive.
Descendant of the Poodle (in French 'Barbichon',
then abbreviated to 'Bichon'), the Bichon Frisé is a
dog of European origin, but the specific country it
comes from is still a matter of debate: experts believe
it is a Mediterranean breed , whose origin can be
dated between 600 BC. and 300 BC The Bichon
Frisé enjoyed great fame in Spain and it was probably
the Spaniards who introduced it to the Canary
Islands. In 1300 the Italian sailors brought it back to
the continent, and the Bichon Frisé spread in the
circles of the nobility. It was one of the most
appreciated companion dogs by the French and
Spanish courts, to the point that many Spanish
painters, including Francisco Goya, included this
breed in their works. Adored by the main European
courts, the Bichon Frisé became one of the most
renowned breeds during the Renaissance, but lost its
popularity at the beginning of the nineteenth century,
quickly becoming a very popular street dog also in
the circus. With the end of the First World War, the
Bichon Frisé returned to the world of luxury, and it
was France in 1933 to recognize it as a breed.
